HOMEMADE GIFTS WEEK: Quick, easy, and frugal fleece fringe scarf

Each day this week we will be featuring a homemade project of some kind to give as a gift this Christmas.  Today is a fleece fringe scarf.  A great gift for a little girl.

This is one of the simplest projects that I have made in a long time. Now it does require some sewing but it is so easy that my 6 year old even made one.

What you need:
Fleece material
Scissors
Sewing machine with matching thread
Cutting mat with 1 inch markings

Fleece material is 58-60" wide - I found this to be a decent length for a kids scarf. Cutting the fleece 5" X the full width is a great size. You can get 7 scarves out of 1 yard if you cut carefully. After making several I found I like to use a solid and a print for each scarf - but feel free to match however you would like.

If you get your fleece on sale this could be a very frugal and quick gift. Joann's regularly has their solid fleece for $5 or less a yard, and print fleece for $7 or less. So, for $12 you can get 7 scaves made - making them under $2 each.

Step 1: Prewash and dry your fabric.
Step 2: Cut your fleece - remember 5" X the full width of the fleece.
Step 3: Layer the rectangles - 1 piece of solid, 1 piece of print fleece for each scarf.
Step 4: Sew a straight stitch right down the center of the rectangles. My 6 year old is able to do this - a great beginner sewing project.
Step 5: Lay the fleece pieces on a cutting mat and cut strips making the fringes of the scarf. I cut every 1 inch and 1 1/2 inches deep. This leaves 2 inches in the center for holding the scarf together. Again this is easy enough for a child with good scissor control to do.
Step 6: Wear it!

These are sets that I made for my nieces. I included hats and mittens to match from a great Jalie pattern that I have!
